![]() UK Pensions Are Failing Expats in Europe……And The Worse Part, Many Don't Realise Until It's Too Late!
By: Michael Jagdev For decades, UK pensions were designed with UK residents in mind. However, as more Britons retire overseas, particularly in Spain, structural limitations, tax mismatches and evolving regulations are creating unintended consequences for those who fail to reassess their arrangements. "Most people assume their pension will simply follow them wherever they go," says Michael Jagdev, a UK-qualified adviser based in Spain who specialises in cross-border planning. "In reality, many schemes were never designed for non-residents, which can lead to unnecessary tax, limited flexibility and missed opportunities." One of the main challenges is how pensions are taxed and accessed once an individual becomes non-UK resident. While pension freedoms improved flexibility, they did not fully address cross-border implications, leaving many expats exposed to inefficient withdrawal structures and avoidable tax liabilities. "These issues are not always obvious," Michael Jagdev explains. "On the surface, everything looks fine. But often the structure is not aligned with residency, future spending currency or long-term tax planning." With continued regulatory changes and growing complexity, Michael Jagdev believes expats should take a proactive approach. "What works in the UK does not always work abroad. Reviewing your pension and seeking appropriate cross-border advice is essential." End
