![]() Cotta Blue To Premiere At Historic Ritz Theatre In MalvernRooted in the history and spirit of the Mississippi Delta, Cotta Blue tells the story of Carter Simms, a gifted young blues musician born in 1927, the year of the Great Mississippi Flood. Guided by faith and shaped by hardship, Carter rises to become one of the most sought-after guitarists in the Delta before being falsely accused of theft and sentenced to ten years at Parchman Farm. While imprisoned, Carter and fellow inmates mark time through call-and-response blues cadences, eventually forming a band whose music reaches beyond prison walls. Their sound is unexpectedly discovered through a shortwave radio signal picked up overseas, leading to international recognition and an invitation to perform in Europe. What follows is a powerful journey of endurance, faith, and redemption. The production also includes a humanitarian component through The Cotta Blue Companion Project, which honors Arkansas Delta bluesmen whose contributions helped shape American music. The initiative seeks to bring recognition to artists whose voices have not always been fully acknowledged. "This is more than a performance. It is a homecoming," Elam's return to the Ritz Theatre marks a full-circle moment. As a child, she attended films there from the balcony. Now, she returns to the main stage as a playwright bringing a culturally rooted production to her home community. Cotta Blue has already drawn the attention of community leaders and dignitaries across the country and is expected to bring together a diverse audience reflective of the unifying power of music. Sponsorship opportunities are currently available, with all contributions processed through Elam's fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas, and may be tax-deductible.
