What is SIP?Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the industry-standard protocol powering the global VoIP ecosystem — the technology behind enterprise phone systems, call centers, and telecom providers worldwide. Key characteristics:
- Routes voice calls over the internet instead of traditional phone lines
- Has been the backbone of business telephony for decades
- Acts as a universal language between phone carriers and software platforms
How Does It Work?Stream's inbound SIP trunk connects external VoIP calls directly into Stream-powered calls via the Stream SIP bridge. Setup is straightforward:
- Create a trunk in the Stream dashboard using a phone number from Twilio or Telnyx
- Define routing rules — either fixed (all calls land in one Stream call) or dynamic (unique call IDs generated per call using templates)
- Authenticate securely using SIP credentials managed directly in the Stream dashboard
Who It's Built ForThis feature is designed for teams building communication-
critical products where users need to join from a standard phone number:
- Telehealth platforms where patients dial in without a smartphone or app
- Enterprise collaboration tools bridging desk phones with digital meetings
- Customer support platforms routing inbound calls into agent queues
- Any product that needs to meet users on a plain old phone line
Why It MattersNot everyone has a smartphone or reliable internet — and not every workflow starts in an app. Inbound SIP trunk support means:
- No need to maintain a separate telecom stack alongside your Stream integration
- Phone calls and app-based calls converge in a single platform
- Broader user reach, regardless of how people choose to connect
- Simpler infrastructure with less operational overhead
