BEIRUT - March 21, 2026 - PRLog -- BEIRUT, Lebanon — A new study by computational researcher and software engineer Mohamed Soufan finds that posts expressing uncertainty in Lebanon-related discussions on X were associated with higher engagement, particularly replies, a pattern he describes as "Uncertainty-Reply Asymmetry."

The study analyzed 16,695 Arabic-language posts collected over a 35-day period, examining how linguistic framing influences interaction and engagement in online discussions. The findings suggest that uncertainty may encourage participation by prompting users to respond, interpret, or add information.

According to the research, posts that included uncertainty, speculation, or open-ended statements were more likely to receive replies and interaction than posts written in more certain or definitive language. The study suggests that uncertainty can function as a driver of discussion in online environments where users react quickly to evolving information and public narratives.

"Uncertainty appeared to create more space for interaction," said Soufan. "Posts that were less definitive often generated more replies and discussion, suggesting that uncertainty can play a role in encouraging participation in online conversations."

The study introduces the term Uncertainty-Reply Asymmetry to describe this engagement pattern and provides a framework for understanding how language and framing influence interaction on digital platforms. The research contributes to ongoing work on online discourse, engagement patterns, and digital communication.

The full research paper, including methodology and statistical analysis, is available as an open-access paper on arXiv.
