Montgomery Counseling Group Expands Trauma and PTSD Care for Charlotte FamiliesThe Charlotte psychotherapy practice offers evidence-based trauma treatment, including EMDR and CBT, for adults, children, and adolescents experiencing PTSD and Complex PTSD.
The National Council for Behavioral Health estimates that 70% of adults in the United States have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives. MCG's clinical team works with clients facing a range of trauma-related conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Understanding PTSD and C-PTSD Trauma can produce a wide range of responses. Flashbacks, recurring memories, insomnia, night terrors, memory gaps, guilt, difficulty concentrating, and emotional numbness are among the most common. MCG's outlines four core response categories that clinicians commonly observe: avoidance of people, places, or situations tied to the traumatic event; re-experiencing through nightmares or intrusive thoughts; hyperarousal such as irritability or reckless behavior; and negative shifts in mood, memory, and daily habits. Evidence-Based Treatment at MCG Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) sits at the center of MCG's trauma work. Developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. in the 1980s, EMDR is a proven psychotherapy method recognized for its effectiveness in treating PTSD, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the second core approach at MCG. CBT is an evidence-based method with a demonstrated track record for supporting people through the responses associated with C-PTSD and trauma. A Team Built Around the Individual John Burns, LCSW, founded MCG in 2018 after more than 30 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. His career spanned youth counseling in adolescent residential treatment, addiction medicine in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and senior management roles in large social service agencies. MCG invites individuals and families in the Charlotte area to contact the practice for a free phone consultation. Clinicians will assess whether EMDR, CBT, or another treatment approach fits the person's situation, and will discuss next steps from there.
