NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - March 11, 2026 - PRLog -- Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) students in Ms. Sylvia's Roots "n" Shoots Club recently traveled to the MA State House in Boston to advocate for bills aimed at protecting the environment.

The students spoke to State Representative Tony Cabral and a staff member at State Senator Mark Montigny's office presenting arguments in favor of a Farm to School bill, a bill to strengthen climate education in schools and the Outdoor Air Quality Act. The GLCPS students joined students from other schools and proponents of these bills for a rally outside of the State House demanding that lawmakers pass laws to protect the environment.

"Our students had a great hands on experience on how our government works with this visit," said Stephen Furtado, Executive Director of GLCPS. "The Roots "n" Shoots club raised awareness of our environment and what citizens can do to promote change. We congratulate our students and Ms. Sylvia on their advocacy for change and protection of our environment."

About Global Learning Public Charter School

Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society.  GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction. Additional information is available on the school's website, www.glcps.org. For more information, please contact the school at (508) 991-4105.
