By: igus® Singapore Pte Ltd Invisible electrostatic discharges can cause significant damage in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. Traditional power and data cable guidance systems are rarely dissipative, forcing engineers to implement space‑consuming shielding or maintain large operating distances. "Both approaches limit design freedom in cleanrooms," The new e‑skin soft ESD solves this dilemma with a compact, closed energy chain made from igus high‑performance plastic containing dissipative additives. Charges are safely discharged through the mounting brackets, allowing the chain to operate close to sensitive products without additional shielding. With tight bend radii of 55mm, multiple size options, and an upper‑lower shell design that forms a fully enclosed guide, the system requires minimal installation space. Its oval geometry and stiffness also enable unsupported lengths, removing the need for guiding elements. The chain's durability delivers a service life of over 20 million double strokes. Engineered for cleanroom use, the e‑skin soft ESD generates virtually no particles—even during high‑speed motion—and securely encloses cables via a practical zip mechanism. Tested in the igus cleanroom laboratory in cooperation with Fraunhofer IPA, the system is now on track for ISO Class 1 certification.
