Wilson began developing the story twenty years ago alongside his brother Billy, who passed away from an accidental overdose in 2005. He was 32 years old. Rather than abandon the project, Wilson carried it forward — and carried Billy with it, writing him into the novel as a character who refuses to stay dead, who still tells bad jokes at the worst possible moment, and who represents everything the book is actually about. Three days after Wilson completed the final manuscript, his fiancée Paula Canales passed away on October 28th, 2025. She was 35 years old. She had been walking their dog when she collapsed from blood clots. She had believed in the book every day she was alive. The Echo Thief is dedicated to both of them.
