Atlanta Tech Founder Files USPTO Patent After University Dispute Over Analytics SystemBy: OutFitters Xchange The patent filing comes following a disputed employment termination from Georgia State University that involved questions regarding the ownership and use of certain analytical reporting systems referenced during internal grievance proceedings. According to documents submitted during the grievance process, the technology at issue relates to automated data transformation and marketing funnel classification methods designed to streamline reporting and analytics workflows. The system was conceived in Summer 2023 and placed into operational use in Winter 2024. The invention is described in a provisional patent application titled: "System and Method for Automated Marketing Funnel Classification and Data Transformation." Georgia State University upheld Emerson's termination following an internal grievance review related to alleged violations of employee handbook policies concerning unauthorized access or alteration of information systems. Emerson maintains that the grievance proceedings did not include presentation of forensic audit logs or documented technical findings establishing intentional misconduct. She has retained counsel to review intellectual property matters and policy compliance relating to the technology referenced during the grievance process. "Public institutions play a critical role in supporting innovation and research," said Levon Austin, an Atlanta resident and Georgia State University alumnus. "When questions arise around intellectual property and authorship, clarity and documented policy processes are essential." The matter remains subject to administrative review procedures available within the University System of Georgia. No civil litigation has been filed at this time. The patent filing has also drawn attention to broader conversations about intellectual property ownership, innovation rights, and technology development within academic and institutional environments.
