Former Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price today responded to reports that charges in the bribery and perjury case against Oakland homicide detective Phong Tran may be dismissed.

Supreme Court winning attorney Price said the potential decision raises serious concerns about equal enforcement of the law.

"Today's developments in the prosecution of the perjury and bribery case involving veteran Oakland homicide detective Phong Tran are deeply troubling and underscore why accountability in law enforcement must be pursued vigorously and without hesitation," Price stated.

Under Price's administration, the investigation and prosecution of Tran's misconduct was vigorously pursued based on what was described as credible evidence that key witnesses had been improperly influenced and that convictions tied to the detective's testimony warranted scrutiny. The apparent availability of a "slush fund" for witnesses was particularly troubling.

"The ensuing review of potentially hundreds of cases tied to this detective's work was an essential step to ensure that (1) justice is not built on compromised evidence and (2) corruption does not go unaddressed in our justice system."

A Broader Pattern in the Current Appointed DA's Office.

Price warned that abandoning even some of the charges would send the wrong message about whether law enforcement officers are held to the same standards as everyone else.

Price noted that one of the first actions of the Jones Dickson administration was to disband the Resentencing Unit that had been reviewing questionable or excessive convictions and the Public Accountability unit that was managing the review of cases potentially tainted by Tran's involvement.

It is clear whom the appointed DA stands for, and whom she considers "a victim." Due to her actions, the families of Steven Taylor, Maurice Monk and Vinetta Martin did not get their day in court to stand for their murdered loved ones.  Righteous cases against law enforcement officers were dropped on flimsy pretenses. This double standard undermines the rule of law.

Justice calls for equal standards according to Price who wants to put her decades of legal experience back to work for the residents of Alameda County. Price's trailblazing work consists of many firsts:
  • Made History as Lead Plaintiff in the landmark case of Alexander vs Yale to Hold Yale University Accountable for Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment under Title IX that resulted in protections for women and girls across the nation
  • First Black Alameda County District Attorney in over 170 years
  • First Black woman to serve as District Attorney
  • First DA elected in 75 years without being appointed first
  • First Alameda County DA to face a recall
  • First to run to regain the Alameda County DA after a recall

Price framed the potential dismissal of the Phong Tran case as part of a broader retreat from internal review and institutional accountability.

"Holding everyone accountable — whether inside or outside law enforcement — must be done thoughtfully, but it must be done. The people of Alameda County deserve clarity, consistency, and a justice system they can trust," said Price.

Price, who is seeking re-election in the June 2026 primary election, said the issue is simple:

"No one is above the law — including law enforcement."
