AWARE project – Road towards results validation

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Feb. 19, 2026 - PRLog -- The AWARE SESAR project successfully completed its dry run tests. The sessions took place from 10 to 13 February 2026 at the LFV R&D Centre in Malmö, Sweden. These sessions focused on final system setup, checking and verifying that all components are integrated and functioning as intended. Together with operational experts, the team reviewed the project scenarios to ensure readiness for the next phase.

The 'Achieving Human-Machine Collaboration with Artificial Situational Awareness (AWARE)' project started on the 1st of June 2024. The University of Zagreb coordinates the project; its members are IFATCA, LFV, Slot Consulting, TERN Systems EHF, UkSATSE, UPM, JKU Linz, and ZHAW School of Engineering. Building on the results of the previous AISA project, AWARE will develop and test an AI Assistant Application providing adaptable human-centric support to enhance air traffic controllers' performance and reduce their workload despite high task complexity. This will be achieved by development of human-machine collaboration environment that relies on recognition of ATCO intent, ATCO situation awareness (compared to machine situation awareness) and ATCO mental load. ATCO's intent will be analysed by tracking their attention and human-machine interactions and comparing them to the tasks that need solving as assessed by the artificial situational awareness system. Adaptable support will then be provided either in solving the task they are currently focused on or solving an unrelated task autonomously. The duration of AWARE will be two and half years; the closing date is 30 November 2026.

The SESAR Joint Undertaking and the European Commission fund the project.

About the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking

The SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking is an institutionalised European private-public partnership set up to accelerate through research and innovation the delivery of the Digital European Sky. The partnership is developing cutting-edge technological solutions to manage conventional aircraft, drones, air taxis and vehicles flying at higher altitudes. The SESAR 3 JU partnership brings together the EU, EUROCONTROL, and more than 50 organisations covering the entire aviation value chain, from airports, airspace users of all categories, air navigation service providers, drone operators and service providers, the manufacturing industry and scientific community. The partnership also works closely with the regulatory and standardisation bodies, notably EASA and EUROCAE, as well as key stakeholders, such as professional staff organisations, the space and military communities and global partners. www.sesarju.eu
