During Black History Month, organizers announced the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Black Theatrical Ensemble (BTE) at the University of Georgia, honoring five decades of artistic excellence, cultural leadership, and community impact. The milestone celebration will take place April 20–26, 2026, and will feature performances, screenings, exhibits, and alumni engagement activities.

Founded in 1976 by journalism graduate student Larry Calhoun, BTE was established to provide Black students with a creative home for storytelling, performance, and cultural expression. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into one of UGA's most enduring and influential student arts organizations.

Over the years, BTE has expanded its mission to include original playwriting, poetry readings, and film programming, launching the careers of numerous accomplished artists. Notable alumni include actor Omari Hardwick, acclaimed performer Tituss Burgess, actor and producer V.J. Roberts, actor and director Anthony Hyatt, theatre director Robert Connor and playwrights Kelundra Smith and Micah Penn.

BTE's legacy also includes groundbreaking productions of major works by Black playwrights such as Lorraine Hansberry, Douglas Turner Ward, Pearl Cleage, Lonne Elder III, Theodis "Ted" Shine Jr., and others, helping define the organization's artistic identity on campus.

The anniversary celebration will culminate on April 26, 2026, with a student theatrical production, an exhibit featuring five decades of BTE memorabilia, and a formal community recognition reception.

Current BTE President Chinelo Ireh emphasized the organization's continuing impact on student leadership, artistic development, and storytelling.

The Black Theatrical Ensemble 50th Anniversary Celebration will serve as both a reunion and a recommitment to BTE's mission of artistic excellence, cultural empowerment, and community engagement.
