CLAYMONT, Del. - Jan. 9, 2026 - PRLog -- A new survey by CerebrumIQ reveals that "smart shaming" is shaping how young adults relate to intelligence, confidence, and self-expression. The study found that 62% of respondents aged 18-36 have experienced being mocked, dismissed, or socially penalized for displaying intelligence or academic interest. Among those affected, 71% reported frequent self-doubt and symptoms of imposter syndrome despite evidence of competence.

The findings suggest this pressure is intensifying in the digital age, where casual online culture often reframes intellectual expression as pretentious. Nearly half of respondents said they avoid sharing thoughtful content online, while 54% admitted to downplaying their knowledge in social or professional settings. The impact is most pronounced among younger adults and in Western markets such as the US and UK.

Encouragingly, the survey also points to solutions. Nearly 60% of participants who engaged with CerebrumIQ's cognitive training tools reported reduced imposter feelings over time, highlighting the value of judgment-free environments that support intellectual growth.

Smart shaming, the report concludes, is not a trivial social trend but a cultural force that may undermine confidence, productivity, and innovation if left unaddressed.
