MUMBAI, India - Jan. 9, 2026 - PRLog -- India, the world's second-largest higher education market, is undergoing a significant transformation, with student enrollment exceeding 43.3 million nationwide. In FY 2025–26, the Government of India allocated INR 50,077.95 crore, accounting for nearly 39% of the Ministry of Education's budget, reinforcing the sector's strategic importance.

Despite scale and higher public spending, structural inefficiencies persist. Makreo Research notes that 79% of students are enrolled in undergraduate programs, while postgraduate (12%) and doctoral enrollments (0.5%) remain limited, reflecting weak penetration of advanced, research-driven education.

5 Crore Graduates Annually, Yet Over 80% Remain Not Industry-Ready
India adds nearly five crore graduates to the workforce each year, yet over 80% are not industry-ready, reflecting a widening gap between academic curricula and industry needs. According to Makreo Research, funding increases alone cannot address this challenge; without targeted investment in faculty upskilling, curriculum modernization, and applied learning, graduate employability will remain constrained.

India's 28.2 Median Age Creates a Two-Decade Growth Window
India's demographic profile remains a powerful tailwind. With a median age of 28.2 years and over 34.5 crore individuals aged 15–29 projected by 2036, the country represents nearly one-fifth of the global youth population.

AI Adoption Accelerates, but Skills Translation Lags
AI is rapidly reshaping India's higher education ecosystem. Over 60% of institutions permit AI tools, with 40% using AI tutors, 39% adopting adaptive learning, and 38% implementing automated grading. India also leads globally with a 107% surge in Generative AI enrollments, surpassing 31 million learners.

However, skills conversion remains uneven. India ranks 89th globally in skills proficiency, with learner scores of 18% in business, 22% in technology, and 20% in data science, reflecting a gap between learning participation and job readiness. Gender disparity also persists, with women representing just 30% of GenAI learners.

Foreign Universities Expand India Footprint, Strengthening Global Integration
India is emerging as a preferred destination for international universities, with institutions from the UK, Australia, the US, and Malaysia establishing domestic campuses. These initiatives, aligned with bilateral frameworks such as India-UK Vision 2035, are expected to strengthen research collaboration, industry partnerships, and advanced skill development.

Market Outlook: Scale Is Assured, Outcomes Will Define Leadership
India's higher education market is moving beyond scale-led growth. As enrollment, AI adoption, and foreign university participation accelerate, future leadership will depend on employability outcomes, research depth, and workforce-aligned curricula. According to Makreo Research, its India Higher Education Market (FY'2021–FY'2030) (https://www.makreo.com/report/india-higher-education-mark...), report highlights that institutions focused on industry relevance, faculty development, and digital learning will lead the next growth phase.
