By: National Montford Point Marine Assn Chapter 47 This year the NMPMA Charleston Chapter will award up to three scholarships of $1,500 to qualifying high school seniors. The National Montford Point Marine Association Charleston Chapter 47 Scholarship Committee will meet in May to review applications. Scholarship award recipients will also be announced at the Chapter Scholarship BBQ Fundraiser planned for August 2026. Chapter 47 Charleston would like to acknowledge all individuals and entities in the local community for their generous contributions to the Scholarship Fund. Eligible applicants can apply by visiting the Chapter 47 Charleston website https://mpma47.org/# Who are the Montford Point Marines? The Montford Point Marines are the first African Americans to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order establishing the Fair Employment Practices Commission in June 1941. The recruits trained at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, NC from August 26, 1942, until the camp was decommissioned on September 9, 1949.
