| New Online Video Highlights Health Risks and Prevention Tips Related to Vibrio BacteriaThe IAQ Video Network and Cochrane & Associates, LLC release educational video on coastal water exposure risks.
Each year, thousands of people enjoy swimming, fishing, and eating fresh seafood along the coast. However, these popular activities can also increase the risk of exposure to Vibrio bacteria, which thrive in salty or brackish waters, particularly during warmer months from May through October. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Vibrio species of greatest concern to human health in the United States include Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus, and Vibrio alginolyticus. These bacteria can cause vibriosis, an infection that ranges from mild gastrointestinal illness to serious and potentially life-threatening wound infections. "The video explains that people typically become infected in two primary ways: by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, especially oysters and shellfish, or by exposing open wounds, even small cuts, to seawater or raw seafood juices," said Paul Cochrane, president of Cochrane & Associates and the IAQ Video Network. "While most healthy individuals recover within a few days, people with weakened immune systems, liver disease, or diabetes face a significantly higher risk of severe illness." The video also emphasizes that vibriosis is largely preventable through simple precautions, including thoroughly cooking seafood, avoiding exposure of open wounds to saltwater or brackish water, using waterproof bandages when contact cannot be avoided, and seeking prompt medical care if a wound becomes red, swollen, or painful after marine exposure. With more than 730 educational videos and over 7.7 million views to date, the IAQ Video Network continues to serve as a trusted hub for environmental, health, and safety information.
