| ![]() 24-Year Brewing Veteran Reveals Viking-Inspired Craft Beer PhilosophyExclusive interview explores experience-based brewing, local sourcing, and the art of crafting award-worthy lagers
Keith's brewing journey began in the Colorado mountains while studying chemistry and microbiology, eventually leading him through positions at Fitger's Brewery in Duluth, Shamrock Brewing Company in Pueblo, and a production facility in St. Louis before arriving in Alexandria in 2019 to build 22 Northman Brewing Company from the ground up. "We're an experience-based brewery," said Keith, describing the unique 180-acre property that hosts up to 2,000 visitors on summer Saturdays. "Being from Colorado, I'm a big green chilli fan. We just released our Pueblo green chilli lager. We roast them here, put them in the tank hot, and then lager the beer." The brewery specialises in lagers, IPAs, and wood barrel-aged beers, with their flagship Norse Lager representing nearly a decade of refinement. Keith's facility design allows unique techniques including using grape skins from the on-site vineyard, wet-hop beers from local farms, and mixed culture beers aged in wine barrels within a historic on-site cave. "Our biggest selling beer is Norse Lager, and it's been a laser focus of mine over almost a decade to make a white lager that honestly is really hard to tell it came from a craft brewery," Keith explained. "A lot of our customers aren't here to focus on beer. They came for maybe something else. Having that product that drinks as crisp and clean and fresh as a macro lager is important to us." Unlike most craft breweries, 22 Northman sells all products on-site with no distribution to retail stores, allowing higher margins for quality ingredients and creative experimentation. The brewery hosts major events including Grave Stomp, which attracts 15,000 visitors over a weekend and serves through 96 kegs. The full interview explores Keith's unique brewing techniques, his Midwest Martini lager blended with olive brine, and his vision for maintaining creative control whilst focusing on customer experience rather than barrel-age growth.
