Oasis Orthodontics Highlights Why Bite Health Matters Beyond Straight Teeth

Dr. Khushee Sharma-Fung founded the practice in 2010 after noticing this pattern during her clinical training. Patients would come in wanting straighter teeth but leave with relief from chronic pain they'd lived with for years.

"Someone will mention they've had headaches for months, or their jaw clicks when they eat," Dr. Sharma-Fung said. "They think it's stress or age. When we fix the bite, those problems disappear. That's what people don't expect from orthodontic treatment."

Misaligned bites create uneven pressure when chewing. Over time, this wears down teeth unevenly and strains jaw joints. Some patients develop speech patterns that compensate for how their teeth meet, or avoid certain foods because chewing hurts.

Dr. Sharma-Fung treats overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites using metal braces, Invisalign clear aligners, or dentofacial orthopedics, depending on the case. Each plan corrects the mechanical problem while straightening teeth.

The practice takes a different approach than larger orthodontic offices. Dr. Sharma-Fung sees every patient at every appointment. She teaches as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and brings that precision to treatment planning.

Timing matters for bite correction. Kids benefit from early evaluation while bones are still growing. Adults see results at any age, especially when bite issues cause daily discomfort or accelerated tooth damage.

The practice schedules appointments after school, evenings, and Saturdays. Treatment happens in private rooms at the historic Washington Street location in Markham Village, north of Highway 7 and Markham Road.
