BREAKING: New York's "Super Flu" Shatters Records—71,000 Cases in One Week

New York State has recorded a staggering 71,123 flu cases in a single week, the highest number since health officials began tracking data in 2004. The outbreak, driven by a new "super flu" strain, has sent hospitalizations soaring and put every county on high alert.
According to the New York State Health Department, cases rose 38% for the week ending December 20, bringing the seasonal total to nearly 190,000. Hospitalizations jumped a alarming 63% statewide, from 2,251 to 3,666 patients. With flu season typically peaking in January, officials warn these numbers could climb even higher.

Staten Island: The Epicenter

Staten Island is bearing the brunt of this surge. The borough recorded 2,406 new cases last week—a 40% increase from the previous week and more than double last year's peak of 1,160. Hospitalizations on the island skyrocketed from 42 to 95 patients in just seven days.
"This strain is hitting harder and faster than anything we've seen post-COVID," said Dr. Thomas Gut of Staten Island University Hospital. The virus spreads up to 24 hours before symptoms appear, making containment nearly impossible.

What Makes This Flu Different

Health experts attribute the surge to subclade-K, a highly contagious variant hammering New York, Colorado, and Louisiana. Victims face 7-10 days of high fever, body aches, and debilitating fatigue. Seniors, infants, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals face the greatest risk.
