Several weeks after his appointment as permanent Executive Director of the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (HRC) by Mayor Daniel Lurie, Mawuli Tugbenyoh appeared as a featured guest on the Wright Enterprises Community Spotlight San Francisco–Dallas (WECS) TV Show hosted by Jackie Wright.

In a wide-ranging interview with journalist and filmmaker Jackie Wright, Tugbenyoh shared insights into his decades-long public service journey, the mission of the HRC, and his commitment to strengthening trust, transparency, and inclusion in local government.

"The Human Rights Commission has been a vital institution for more than 60 years — advancing equity, protecting rights, and uplifting voices of our most vulnerable communities," Tugbenyoh said. "My goal is to ensure that San Francisco continues to be a beacon of fairness and opportunity for everyone."

Public Service Rooted in Community and Integrity

With nearly two decades of experience in city government and nonprofit leadership, Tugbenyoh has served in roles spanning the Mayor's Office, Department of Human Resources, Board of Supervisors, and as acting Executive Director of the HRC before his permanent appointment in 2025.

"Director Tugbenyoh represents a generation of leaders who blend policy experience with grassroots understanding," said Wright. "Our show exists to spotlight that kind of bridge-building public service that uplifts entire communities. The conversation was refreshing as he did not dodge the previous controversies of the commission, nor did he dwell on them. It was an invigorating forward leaning discussion."

Current San Francisco Human Rights Commissioners are: Leah Pimentel, Chair; Hasib, Emran, Vice Chair; Eric Chang; Mark Kelleher; Monroe Lace; Sarah Montoya; Irene Yee Riley; Amerika Sanchez; Robert Sandoval; Michael Sweet; and Rosie Williams
