BAAR, Switzerland - Nov. 26, 2025 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 167.25, focusing on the identification and correction of errors in the EU's Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 on recycled materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Several errors have been identified since the implementation of the Regulation in October 2022. Key provisions on its publication included:
- New rules for the use of suitable recycling technologies for recycling waste into food contact plastics that comply with Article 3 'General requirements' under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and are microbiologically safe
- Establishing requirements on the development and use of recycling technologies
- Detailing the procedure for the authorization of individual recycling processes
- Establishing an EU register for novel technologies, recyclers, recycling processes, recycling schemes and decontamination installations
- Specifying requirements for waste management operators

However, on November 13, Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/2269 was issued by the EU, correcting (EU) 2022/1616, specifically concerning the labeling of recycled plastic, the development of recycling technologies and the transfer of authorizations.

These corrections provide clarification of the original clauses and identify the economic operators responsible for implementing the specified provisions in EU 2022/1616.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 167.25 includes a helpful table comparing the original Regulation with the corrections issued in Regulation (EU) 2025/2269.
