By: INSTITUT H. HARTMANN Institut de Radiothérapie et de Radiochirurgie H. Hartmann and AP-HP hospitals Lariboisière, Beaujon, and Saint-Louis have installed the first ZAP-X cranial radiosurgery system in a French public hospital. This pioneering installation at Centre de Radiochirurgie Paris Nord represents a significant milestone in democratizing access to advanced radiosurgery technology. Revolutionary Technology Enters Public Healthcare The ZAP-X system represents the first major innovation in cranial radiosurgery in 50 years. As the world's first self-shielded radiosurgery platform, it eliminates the need for traditional concrete bunkers, featuring a unique gyroscopic architecture that generates hundreds of converging mini-beams of high-energy X-rays with submillimeter precision. The system includes integrated high-resolution imaging with automatic repositioning every 45 seconds and real-time dosimetric monitoring. Any deviation between planned treatment and actual delivery triggers automatic session interruption, ensuring optimal safety. Clinical Applications and Patient Benefits The ZAP-X system treats multiple intracranial pathologies including brain metastases, benign tumors such as meningiomas and schwannomas, rare tumors, vascular malformations, and functional indications including trigeminal neuralgia and certain epilepsy cases. Treatment sessions last under 30 minutes without anesthesia, incision, or hospitalization. Patients wear a custom-fitted mask for head immobilization and can return home immediately after treatment, typically requiring one to three sessions for complete treatment. The technology's reduced penumbra minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissues, resulting in fewer side effects. Expert Collaboration and Research The project unites leading medical expertise from public and private sectors. Dr. Marc Bollet and Dr. Nathaniel Scher from Institut Hartmann work closely with Professor Christophe Hennequin (radiotherapy, AP-HP), Dr. François Nataf (neurosurgery, AP-HP), and Professor Sébastien Froelich. Enhanced Patient Access The ZAP-X installation at Lariboisière Hospital is the second in France and the first in a public hospital setting. No other French public university hospital currently operates a ZAP-X system, positioning AP-HP as a pioneer in this technology's clinical utilization and scientific development.
