Historic Solar Storm Approaches: Northern Lights Potentially Visible Across Half of U.S. on Nov.12

NEW WHITELAND, Ind. - Nov. 11, 2025 - PRLog -- Space weather experts are warning of one of the most powerful solar storms in a decade, which could produce auroral displays visible far beyond their typical polar regions. According to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch has been issued for Wednesday, November 12, 2025. This alert follows multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that erupted from the Sun between November 9-12, with the most recent and energetic CME associated with an X5.1 solar flare (R3; Strong) that peaked at 1004 UTC (5:04 am EST) on November 11.
"This event is exceptional," explains Dr. Michael Rodgers, solar physicist at SWPC. "The most recent CME is the fastest and most energetic in this current series and could trigger one of the strongest geomagnetic storms we've seen this year."
The storm is expected to reach Earth early on November 12, potentially making the Northern Lights visible across many U.S. states that rarely experience this phenomenon. Preliminary reports indicate residents in states as far south as Indiana may have a chance to witness the spectacular light show under optimal viewing conditions.
Experts recommend northern and eastern U.S. residents monitor the night sky starting the evening of November 12, with cameras and smartphones pointed toward the northern horizon. The SWPC also advises taking precautions for sensitive technological systems, as power grids and satellite communications may be affected during the storm's peak.
