![]() Through the toughest solar rally in the world with igusTeam Sonnenwagen of RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen optimises solar car with lightweight components made of high-performance plastics from igus
By: igus® Singapore Built by over 40 students from disciplines including mechanical and electrical engineering, the futuristic three-wheeled vehicle runs exclusively on solar energy. After ten months of intensive development, the team relied on high-performance, lubrication- "We were amazed to cut component weight by 80% compared to metal bearings," says Charlotte Teckentrup of Team Sonnenwagen. "This improved energy efficiency and driving comfort while ensuring robustness." Despite an electrical fault that dropped them from pole position, the team clawed back to finish fourth with an average speed of 85 km/h over 36.5 hours. "Team Sonnenwagen has shown what true engineering is all about—resilience and innovation," The achievement underscores German engineering excellence and the promise of solar-powered transportation for a sustainable future.
