65 Times more Wear-resistant: igus develops Ball Bearings for extreme chemical loads

GENTING LANE, Singapore - Nov. 3, 2025 - PRLog -- igus has introduced two innovative chemical-resistant xiros ball bearings designed for applications in harsh environments. These bearings are 65 times more wear-resistant than standard PEEK ball bearings, making them ideal for industries such as chemical processing, aerospace, automotive, and medical technology.

Whenever ball bearings encounter chemicals—whether in agitators, gearboxes, aircraft turbines, or laboratory analyzers—corrosion and premature failure are common risks. "Traditional metal bearings corrode easily, and even PEEK bearings reach their limits under chemical exposure combined with high speeds and loads," explains Marcus Semsroth, Head of the xiros Polymer Ball Bearing Business Unit at igus. "Our new ceramic ball bearings offer superior safety, efficiency, and service life."

The exceptional durability comes from a unique design: races and balls made of technical ceramics combined with a PEEK-based cage developed by igus. Internal lab tests confirm these bearings are 65 times more wear-resistant than full-PEEK alternatives. They are also 40% lighter than metal bearings, improving energy efficiency at high speeds. Additional benefits include maintenance-free dry operation, non-magnetic properties, and electrical insulation—ideal for sensitive applications like electric motors.

Two Variants for Specialized Applications
igus offers two versions:

• Zirconium oxide bearings – Tough, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective for chemical plants, medical devices, and food industry.
• Silicon nitride bearings – High thermal stability for aerospace and environments with superheated steam or rapid temperature changes.

Both variants withstand alkaline environments, high speeds, and extreme temperatures. Currently available in three DIN sizes (8mm, 10mm, 12mm inner diameters), with custom dimensions upon request.
