By: igus® Singapore Developing sustainable agricultural machines is challenging due to the need for alternative components. Norwegian company Kilter addresses this with the AX-1, a fully autonomous robot that uses GPS, AI, and a vision system to identify weeds. Instead of widespread herbicide spraying, it precisely targets weeds with tiny droplets, like an inkjet printer. This method boosts crop yields by up to 35% and cuts chemical use by 95%, according to CEO Anders Brevik. Norway's AX-1 robot also protects soil health by minimizing chemical use and ground compaction. "We wanted the AX-1 to be as eco-friendly as possible," says Kilter's Design Engineer Trygve Weum. Lightweight components were key, especially for the spray module, which posed a challenge due to typically heavy, lubricant-based systems. A breakthrough came with a lubrication- To adjust spray height, Kilter uses igus's drylin SLW-25120 linear module, featuring a lightweight, grease-free design. Its aluminum guide and motor-driven spindle move the spray nozzle precisely, while solid lubricants in the plastic bearings ensure smooth, dry operation. This avoids dust buildup, reduces friction, and eliminates the need for relubrication— Kilter engineers value the robustness of igus's linear module, crucial for field conditions. Its torsion-resistant double-shaft design handles axial loads up to 2,500N and radial forces up to 10,000N—more than enough to reliably move the 60kg spray module.
