Rangers are set to sack Russell Martin

IKEJA, Nigeria - Oct. 6, 2025 - PRLog -- Rangers Football Club have officially sacked head coach Russell Martin after a calamitous beginning to the 2025-26 season. The decision comes just 123 days into the former Southampton boss's three-year contract.

The breaking point came after Rangers were held to a 1-1 draw away at Falkirk. It left the side with only one win in seven Premiership matches, languishing in eighth place in the league and trailing title rivals by a hefty margin. European competition had also proved brutal. Rangers were knocked out of the Champions League qualifying rounds by Club Brugge with a 9-1 aggregate defeat, then went on to lose their opening Europa League matches to Genk and Sturm Graz.

Off the pitch, tensions boiled over. Fans blocked the team bus after the Falkirk draw and Martin was escorted to his car by police amid boos and growing anger. These scenes intensified pressure on both Martin and the club's board.

Rangers have also released assistant head coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson. Club officials cited unacceptable results and failure to meet expectations, despite acknowledging the hard work from Martin and his staff. Now the club faces the urgent task of appointing a replacement, stabilising performances, and winning back a disenchanted fanbase. The hope is that a new manager can steady the ship before the season slips further away.
