Egypt Introduces Customs Duty Exemption on Smartphones for Egyptian Travelers

GIZA, Egypt - Sept. 30, 2025 - PRLog -- The Egyptian Customs Authority has announced a new measure exempting Egyptian citizens from paying customs duties on one imported smartphone brought into the country per traveler. The decision, which was highlighted in a report by Youm7, marks a significant shift in customs policy and is expected to reduce costs for individuals bringing mobile devices into Egypt.

According to the new directive, each Egyptian passport holder will be entitled to import one smartphone without incurring customs charges, provided that the device is properly registered through the official electronic registration system. Travelers may bring up to four mobile devices; however, only one will be duty-exempt, while the remaining devices will remain subject to the standard customs tariffs.

For foreign passport holders, a three-month exemption window has been introduced. During this period, foreign visitors may also import one smartphone without customs duties and without prior registration requirements. Devices exceeding the permitted quantity (five or more) will be treated as commercial imports and will be subject to stricter commercial regulations.

The change comes in the wake of recent debates over customs fees on mobile devices, which had previously reached approximately 37.5% of the device's value. The exemption is expected to improve accessibility for consumers, streamline customs procedures at ports of entry, and enhance confidence among travelers.
