The S.M.I.L.E. Mile, as S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome's biggest event every year, brings together the Evansville community in a show of support for people with Down syndrome and their families. As a day of celebration and recognition, it promotes social wellness and acceptance. One parent of someone with Down syndrome noted that "The S.M.I.L.E. Mile is like our Christmas morning." They have been attending the S.M.I.L.E. Mile walks for twenty-three years. S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome has arranged to have food trucks, craft vendors, a DJ, a talent show, movie characters, and guest appearances, as well as fun activities like a bounce house, foam party, face painting, and pumpkin painting at the S.M.I.L.E. Mile. Student volunteers from three Evansville-area high schools are attending to cheer on the teams and help with activities. S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome invites everyone to join them at the S.M.I.L.E. Mile to share in a day of fun, excitement, and joy. "We would love to invite our entire community to come join us for the S.M.I.L.E. Mile in celebration of our loved ones with Down syndrome," Founder and Director Nina Fuller encourages. "It really is a very special day and I promise if you attend, you will go home filled with a new dose of happiness!" Founded in 2000 by Nina Fuller after the birth of her own daughter with Down syndrome, S.M.I.L.E. on Down Syndrome is committed to providing a network of support services to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and educational needs of people of all ages with Down syndrome, their families, and their communities.
