SAAK Health Recognizes Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month

SAAK Health raises awareness this September about Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), its link to non-healing wounds, and the importance of early detection, treatment, and lifestyle changes to prevent serious complications.

BROOKFIELD, Wis. - Sept. 11, 2025 - PRLog -- SAAK Health proudly joins the nationwide effort to recognize September as Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to educating communities about PAD prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment—especially when PAD is linked to non-healing wounds.

According to the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions, PAD affects more than 10 million Americans and remains one of the leading causes of non-traumatic amputations in the United States. PAD occurs when the arteries that deliver blood to the limbs become narrowed or blocked due to atherosclerosis—a buildup of fatty deposits on the artery walls. The result is reduced blood flow, which can cause leg pain during walking (claudication) and, in severe cases, chronic non-healing wounds or ulcers.

PAD is often underdiagnosed because its early symptoms can be mild or mistaken for other issues. Without proper treatment, however, it can lead to serious complications, including tissue damage, infections, and potential amputation. Recognizing the warning signs early—leg pain, numbness, coldness in the feet, or wounds that don't heal—is critical for timely intervention.

Poor circulation from PAD significantly impacts wound healing. When blood flow is restricted, the delivery of oxygen and nutrients needed for tissue repair slows down. This also weakens the immune response in the affected area, increasing the risk of infection and delaying recovery. Left untreated, these wounds can progress to severe conditions such as gangrene.

Risk factors for PAD include smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Taking preventive action—such as routine checkups, lifestyle changes, and vascular health monitoring—can make a big difference. For patients already diagnosed with PAD, proper wound care is essential. Keeping wounds clean, watching for infection, and seeking professional care early can prevent complications.

SAAK Health's wound care clinic provides advanced treatments designed to improve healing for patients with PAD-related wounds. In addition to medical care, adopting healthier habits—quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet, and exercising regularly—can help restore better blood flow and improve quality of life.

By increasing awareness and encouraging early action, we can reduce the impact of PAD and protect patients from preventable complications.
