From Monkeys to Men: Costa Rica Farm Turns Tourism Into Healing

COCO BEACH, Costa Rica - Sept. 3, 2025 - PRLog -- Playa Ocotal, Costa Rica- What began as a monkey rescue in 2013 has grown into one of the most inovative faith-based recovery programs in the world.  At The Monkey Farm in Guanacaste, 100% of proceeds from horseback tours and farm experiences fund programs that restore broken lives - programs ranging from residential addiction recovery and trauma healing to equine therapy, animal rescue and more.

Unlike traditional rehab models, The Monkey Farm is not about simply getting men clean and sober. Inspired by Teen Challenge, the ministry has built on that foundation with far more: aquaponics, natural horsemanship, trauma healing, second language learning, chess for cognitive development, family reintegration, and job readiness. Each element is designed to disciple men, equipping them to live with purpose, faith, and freedom.

"Jesus told us to go out and make disciples, not clean and sober people," says founder Vicki Conley. "If we don't create disciples, we are missing the mark."

Men who once slept on sidewalks, abandoned by family and consumed by addiction, are now caring for horses, studying English, serving their community, and leading others in faith. The impact is undeniable. In recent years, The Monkey Farm has built new dormitories, hired a full-time psychologist, and applied for certification as an official addiction recovery center in Costa Rica. This designation will unlock government resources, allowing the program to expand its reach. The farm also plans to launch an English-language addiction recovery track for North Americans, offering the same proven program at a fraction of U.S. costs.
