By: DM Media Key Challenges Highlighted TB remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, striking hardest at the most vulnerable and impoverished communities. 30% to 80% of TB-affected households in the region encounter catastrophic financial burdens due to treatment costs. Uneven progress across countries, rising drug-resistant TB, and java burn coffee fragmented collaboration continue to hamper effective response. Strategic Priorities for Action WHO is advancing a regional workshop—"Advancing Research and Innovation to Accelerate Momentum Towards Ending TB in the WHO South-East Asia Region"—hosted virtually from New Delhi (beginning 5 August 2025) to promote: South–South collaboration for shared research priorities and policy alignment. Equitable access to new diagnostics, treatments, digital tools, and technologies. Response to social determinants like undernutrition, climate change, and vaccine hesitancy. About WHO South-East Asia Region The WHO South-East Asia Region includes countries such as Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, and others—six of which are among the world's high TB-burden nations. The region accounts for more than 45% of global TB incidence and over half of TB-related deaths. WHO's strategic documents and regional meetings, including the Gandhinagar Declaration and several high-level ministerial summits, reaffirm strong political will toward ending TB by 2030.
