PRLog -- In simple words, Heart bypass surgery is a medical procedure to restore blood flow when the coronary arteries are blocked. Surgeons use a healthy blood vessel from the chest, arm, or leg to bypass the blocked artery and reroute blood to the heart muscle.
Heart bypass surgery, or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is used when coronary artery disease causes severe narrowing, chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or poses a high risk of heart attack.
Symptoms & Causes Lead to CABG
Symptoms - Chest pain or pressure (angina)
- Shortness of breath
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeats
- Fatigue or swelling in hands/feet
- Indigestion or nausea
Common Causes - Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in coronary arteries)
- High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes
- Unhealthy lifestyle factors, smoking, poor diet, and sedentary habits
Tests to Be Done Before Surgery - ECG (resting or during exercise)
- Echocardiogram to assess heart pumping and valve function
- Coronary angiography or CT angiography to see blockages
- Intravascular ultrasound or fractional flow reserve to assess severity
Heart Bypass Surgery Step‑by‑Step Procedure - Before the surgery, the doctors did tests like ECG, echo, blood tests, and a discussion with the surgeon.
- General anesthesia, and open-chest via cutting the sternum.
- Connect to a heart–lung bypass machine (on-pump) or operate on the beating heart (off-pump).
- Harvest vessels (often internal mammary artery or leg vein) and attach grafts to route blood around blockages.
- Surgery typically lasts 3 to 6 hours, depending on number of bypasses needed.
- Hospital stay is usually 3–7 days; ICU early, then step-down ward.
Exercise & Activity - Start walking daily, slowly increasing the distance, but avoid heavy lifting (more than 9 kg) or pushing/pulling objects.
- Don't stand in one spot for more than 15 minutes; do light household work.
- Avoid repetitive arm movements above shoulder height until cleared by a physician.
- Join a cardiac rehabilitation program with supervised aerobic exercise like brisk walking or cycling.
- Exercise 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. Walking is very safe and effective.
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Recovery & RisksIf you've had or are preparing for a heart bypass surgery, it's natural to have questions about recovery and possible risks.
- Most patients need to stay 1–2 days in the ICU for close monitoring.
- The total hospital stay is usually 5–7 days, depending on overall health and complications.
- You'll have a breathing tube initially, which is removed once you're awake and stable.
- Tubes for fluids and drainage are common and are removed within a few days.
Risks and ComplicationsCABG is a common and generally safe procedure, but like all major surgeries, it carries risks:
- Bleeding or infection
- Arrhythmias
- Stroke or heart attack
- Blood clots
- Kidney issues
