As summer subsides into autumn, the changing colours of the season are best enjoyed in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites holiday region of Italy's South Tyrol. The dramatic mountain scenery, with the iconic Tre Cime at its heart, basks in the glow of the late sun showing the peaks at their resplendent best.

Autumn is also a time to enjoy the fruits of the earth, and in 3 Zinnen Dolomites that means the 12th iteration of the mouth-watering Dolomiti Gourmet Festival (3-5 October). Brainchild of local chef Chris Oberhammer of Tilia in Dobbiaco (Michelin-star for 18 consecutive years), the festival gains repute with every year that passes. The event attracts national and international Michelin-rated chefs who collaborate with local chefs to create dishes with local produce to showcase South Tyrolean terroir.

The event starts with a food safari in San Candido on Friday evening; two guided groups taste 11 dishes at six gourmet stations, culminating at the museum for a dessert buffet, and welcome party hosted by the chefs and restaurateurs: €150 pp - includes drinks/max 80 guests

On Saturday evening three guest chefs join the Jora Mountain Dining team; each creates three canapé snacks and two gourmet dishes for guests to savour. Above San Candido, the breathtaking Dolomites view is gratis: €120 pp, includes drinks/max 70 guests

The five-hour finale in Restaurant Gigante Baranci at the Monte Baranci mountain station starts at 11am. Participating chefs at their own pop-up cooking station will create something delicious using regional ingredients. South Tyrolean growers will present their selection of wines to complement the dishes. Arrive by cable car (valid lift pass required), or enjoy a pleasant 1½-hours hike passing autumnal flora and fauna: food, drinks and wine charged as taken/no limit on numbers.

The celebrity chef line-up includes Paolo Casagrande (3* Lasarte/Barcelona), Nicola Batavia (1* Il Birichin/Turin), Mickael Meziane (1*  La Passerelle/Paris), Arnaud Viel (1* Restaurant Arnaud Viel/Argentan), and Italian chefs Thomas Gantioler (B-Local/Bruneck), Salvatore Aprea (Ristorante da Tonino/Capri) and Tina Marcelli.
