Summer Isn't Just a Break - It's an Opportunity for Families of Children with Disabilities

FORT MYERS, Fla. - July 7, 2025 - PRLog -- As the final school bells ring and summer begins, many families in our community breathe a collective sigh of relief. The car lines disappear, alarm clocks are silenced, and the pressures of school schedules momentarily fade. But for parents and caregivers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), this season brings more than sunshine and relaxation—it presents an essential opportunity to plan for the future.

For families of students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), summer should be viewed as preparation time. The months ahead are ideal for taking meaningful steps that can have a lasting impact on a child's long-term success and independence.

A crucial first step is exploring eligibility for services through Florida's Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD). If your child hasn't applied for the Medicaid Waiver, now is the time. The waiver provides vital support services—such as help with daily living skills, behavioral therapy, transportation, and job coaching—that can greatly enhance quality of life. Importantly, the application process can be lengthy, so beginning early can make all the difference.

For many families, the Medicaid Waiver is more than just paperwork—it's a lifeline. It reduces financial strain and ensures that individuals with disabilities can receive the care they need while remaining active, included members of their communities.

Another key consideration is guardianship and supported decision-making. Individuals are considered legal adults at age 18, regardless of their disability. That means they can enter into contracts, make medical decisions, get married and manage financial matters independently—unless legal alternatives are in place. Families should use the summer to explore what level of support their young adult may need and understand the options available to protect their future.

It's also critical to acknowledge the role of caregivers—often parents, grandparents, or siblings—who shoulder immense responsibility. Services and supports are not only for individuals with disabilities—they are for the families who care for them. Caregiver burnout is real, and without proper support systems, it can take a serious toll. Accessing services early can provide families with the tools they need to manage challenges and find balance.
