Siyona Raina - What Being a Makeup Artist Is Really Like

By: Siyona Raina

ROSWELL, Ga. - July 3, 2025 - PRLog -- I truly love what I do. Even with the 4 AM call times, I wake up excited (though sometimes bleary-eyed!) and think to myself, "Wow, this is my job?" Every day is a new location—no two days are ever the same. One day I'm working in a cozy studio in downtown Atlanta, the next I'm on location at a farm, inside a hotel room, or even backstage at a theatre. I've done makeup in moving cars, tight restrooms, and once, believe it or not, in a tiny coffee shop storeroom between espresso machines.

Before becoming a full-time makeup artist, I worked in retail and corporate jobs. But the desk life? It just didn't fit me. I always craved more creativity and movement. Now, as a freelance makeup artist based in Roswell, Georgia, I work with a wide range of clients—from brides and prom-goers to editorial shoots, corporate headshots, local film productions, fashion shows, and commercial campaigns. Atlanta is a growing hub for entertainment, but it's still considered a secondary market, so you learn to be versatile and ready for anything.

Freelancing is not for the faint of heart. A single job might last 10–12 hours, and that doesn't include the behind-the-scenes work. I spend just as much time answering emails, following up with clients, sending invoices, managing supplies, marketing my services, and updating my website and social media. And let's not forget deep-cleaning my brushes and tools after every gig—washing over 50 brushes a day is just normal here.

People often think my job is super glamorous. I mean, sure—it can be fun and exciting. But what they don't see is me dabbing sweat off a model's face in the sweltering Georgia sun during a bridal shoot or setting up a full kit in a dimly lit room with no AC. The final photo might look flawless, but it took hours of effort, collaboration, and quick fixes to get there.

This career takes a lot more than knowing how to apply pretty makeup. It's 30% artistry and 70% running a business. You have to hustle, stay motivated, and constantly adapt. There are sacrifices—lost sleep, missed holidays—but also major rewards: happy clients, stunning transformations, and the joy of turning creativity into a career.

I'm Siyona Raina, and this is the beautiful chaos behind the brush.
