American Academy of Pain Medicine Launches Nation's First Chronic Pain–Focused Hackathon

AUSTIN, Texas - June 14, 2025 - PRLog -- The American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) has made history with the successful launch of Hacking Pain, the United States' first hackathon dedicated exclusively to tackling the challenges of chronic pain care. Held at Dell Medical School in Austin, TX, the two-day event convened innovators, engineers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs to prototype bold, scalable solutions aimed at improving equity and access in pain treatment.

Participants included students and early-career professionals who went beyond brainstorming, conducting field analysis, receiving expert mentorship, and presenting actionable, patient-centric solutions.

"The future of pain care is brighter because of them," said Dr. Brian Mayrsohn who supported the event alongside a multidisciplinary team of mentors and physicians.

Winning Projects from the Hackathon:

• 🥇 1st Place – P.L.A.C.E.
  A passive learning and adaptive environment to detect chronic pain triggers and intervene before flare-ups occur.
• 🥈 2nd Place – Endura
  A solution tracking hormonal shifts and tailoring support for women facing pain fluctuations.
• 🎖 People's Choice – PainPal
  A crowdsourced task support app that connects people with chronic pain to help with daily burdens.

Mentorship & Support:
The event was made possible through the contributions of over a dozen industry mentors, including leaders from the US Pain Foundation, Pain Collaborative, and top clinicians. Sponsors such as OxiWear, EnableHealth LLC, and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP offered critical support, with Dell Medical School serving as venue partner.

"This hackathon is not just a one-time event—it's a movement," said Salman Hirani, MD, one of the event's core organizers.
