Enter Merkin Vineyards and its sister project, Caduceus Cellars, helmed by none other than Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer.

Yes, you read that right. Rock star turned winemaker. And not just any winemaker — Maynard is dead serious about Arizona wine, and the results are turning heads and challenging expectations. What started as a passion project has grown into one of the most compelling wineries in the Southwest, one that shines a spotlight on the rugged potential of Arizona terroir.

From Rock Stages to Red Soil

Keenan's journey into wine began as a personal obsession. After falling in love with wine on tour in Italy and France, he began studying the craft, eventually planting vines in Arizona's high-elevation regions. In 2004, Caduceus Cellars was born in the small town of Jerome, Arizona—an old mining town perched at 5,000 feet with breathtaking views and surprisingly ideal growing conditions for wine.

Soon after, Merkin Vineyards came into being as the more accessible, everyday counterpart to Caduceus. Together, the two labels tell a story not just of a winemaker, but of a state slowly finding its voice in the wine world …
