April 26-27By: District 86 Toastmasters International More than 150 Toastmasters International Members from across southern Ontario are expected to attend the annual event. "Toastmasters is about personal growth and leadership in a supportive environment, helping members learn how to better communicate and succeed in their careers and personal lives," says District 86 Director Anne Dockeray, DTM, a 12-year Toastmaster from Waterloo, Ontario. The conference theme is "Unlock Your Potential." "Our conference gives us a chance to gather and celebrate excellence, share our skills, and choose our entrant into the World Championship of Public Speaking planned for Philadelphia in August." Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development, founded 101 years ago. Toastmasters District 86 has more than 100 clubs and is growing, with more than 1,500 members in community clubs, companies, universities or colleges, and governments. It also has online and bilingual clubs. The district includes: the counties of Bruce, Grey, Huron, Lambton, and Middlesex, Elgin, Haldimand, Norfolk, and Wellington; regions of Niagara and Halton; the City of Hamilton, and the southeast section of Mississauga. The conference includes international keynote speakers, educational workshops, and public speaking contests. During the Conference, a non-Toastmaster will be presented the District Communication & Leadership Award. It honours a businessperson, community leader, local politician, or media person who is an outstanding communicator and leader. The conference is organized for District 86 members, but the community at large is invited to register to attend.
