Frick India's Ammonia Compressors Ensure Efficiency and Sustainability

NEW DELHI - April 14, 2025 - PRLog -- In recent years, compressors have come with a wide range of technological advancements. Positive displacement compressors using pistons and screws are designed for various pressure ratios. In the field of ammonia industrial refrigeration, compressors have an integral semi-hermetic IPM motor, which has not only reduced the risk of leakage of ammonia but also improved the overall COP, as the motor is cooled with the refrigerant and takes up to 25% less energy at peak load. As we can see, the world is shifting towards more natural refrigerants and excluding harmful GWP refrigerants from the fields to reduce net carbon emissions and carbon tax. Frick India Screw and Reciprocating Compressors are manufactured with very high-precision machining centers and have an expected overall life of 20 years. However, with high-pressure refrigerants like CO2, which have gained popularity since 2018, the internal lobe and piston clearances have been reduced; furthermore, the outer compressor frame has curvy and thicker walls, and DX cooling methods have also had an impact on the expected life of compressors.
Our variable speed drives have improved the energy consumption of systems with variable load conditions. It can be seen that holding on to the evaporator temperature is more precise with the variable speed of the compressor, which saves power up to 40% versus a direct starter system. The initial investment in additional variable drives is one of the factors that is decided as per the size of the product load and the variation in temperature it requires from harvest to storage in the cold chain.
The selection of a compressor for the correct refrigeration application is essential to determining the cooling performance. A standby compressor is always recommended to ensure zero downtime in production. Screw compressors are therefore used in industrial refrigeration, which fulfills both high pressure ratio and energy efficiency requirements for refrigeration plants using an independent intercooler with liquid injection in the compressor.
Over the past decade, major developed countries have banned the use of high-GWP refrigerants and are moving towards safer and greener refrigerants, which comparatively have low GWP. We encourage our users to monitor CO2 emissions from their cooling and heating process facilities annually and take adequate measures to eliminate harmful effects on the environment by encouraging the use of natural refrigeration systems.
In the case of oil and coal, 2260 megajoules of primary energy are needed, whereas natural refrigerants like CO2 and ammonia, which have close to zero GWP, consume only 15 kilowatt-hours (54 MJ) to generate the same 1 tonne of vapour. This is because of the reuse of the latent heat of natural refrigerant.
