PRLog -- Overseas Votes Under Threat - AARO announces its letter to Congress opposing the SAVE Act
PARIS, FRANCE: The Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO) announces that it has, together with the U.S. Vote Foundation, the Federation of American Women's Clubs Overseas and others, sent a letter to members of the House of Representatives, urging them to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22 / S. 128). The SAVE Act could come to a vote in the House as early as this week.
The SAVE Act would require Americans to present documentary proof
in person to a local election official every single time they register or re-register to vote. This would effectively eliminate the mail-in and online registration process that overseas Americans have used for decades and would be devastating to the overseas vote.
Says Doris L. Speer, President of AARO, "
American citizens living overseas are deeply committed to American democracy; yet the SAVE Act does not account for their participation in American elections. Instead, it would decimate the ability of millions of overseas Americans, civilian and military, to register and vote. We see ourselves as expatriates, not ex-patriots."
