In a strong initiative to promote road safety and responsible driving habits, Mandapet Town Police, in collaboration with local welfare-minded organizations including the Smiley Children Society, conducted an impactful helmet awareness campaign on Thursday. The event, held across key junctions in Mandapet, was led by Circle Inspector Daram Suresh and Sub-Inspector G Chanti, who actively interacted with two-wheeler riders. In a unique and humane move, the police used funds collected from violators to directly purchase helmets for those found riding without one — promoting safety instead of just penalizing. "Wearing a helmet is not just a rule, it's a shield for your life. It's like Sri Rama Raksha for your family," said CI Daram Suresh while handing over helmets to several motorists. The Smiley Children Society, known for its community-driven campaigns and educational outreach, praised the effort and extended support. Founder Prudhvi Moses commented that the initiative reflects the type of safety-first mindset they also instill in youth programs. "Helmet safety is part of our awareness sessions in schools. We're happy to see the police adopt an empathetic and educational approach over punishment," The campaign drew attention from hundreds of commuters, and many appreciated the thoughtful model of reinvesting fine money into public safety gear. Volunteers and students associated with Smiley Children Society were also seen distributing leaflets on road safety rules, highlighting the importance of helmets, reflective jackets, and obeying traffic signals. According to the Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Authority, head injuries account for nearly 60% of road fatalities in the state. Mandapet Police and NGOs like Smiley Children Society hope that such collaborations will spark behavioral change, especially among the youth. This event marks yet another milestone in Smiley Children Society's expanding scope — from health and hygiene to now advocacy in civic responsibility and road safety.
