Oversight in UV Water Treatment Maintenance Could Pose Health Risks, Warns Lake George Water Systems

During recent service calls, David Hartmann, an experienced engineer with Lake George Water Systems, discovered a concerning issue: many UV water treatment systems have not had their quartz sleeves replaced.

QUEENSBURY, N.Y. - Jan. 30, 2025 - PRLog -- While UV lamps are often replaced by homeowners or plumbers, the quartz sleeve – a transparent protective sleeve crucial for proper UV light transmission – is frequently overlooked. Replacing the quartz sleeve requires shutting off and depressurizing the water system which can be intimidating for homeowners. Even professionally serviced systems are often found with quartz sleeves that are years overdue for replacement.

Typical service periods are one year for the lamp and two years for the quartz sleeve. Failing to adhere to these schedules can significantly reduce the system's effectiveness.

"Without regular replacement of the quartz sleeve, the UV light cannot penetrate the water, and the system fails to disinfect effectively," said David Hartmann. "This oversight could expose families to harmful bacteria and potential illness, even if the UV lamp has been replaced. I've known this was a problem for a long time, but after seeing one of the worst sleeves in a home occupied by an elderly couple, I knew we had to take action. Despite years of professional maintenance, they faced serious health risks."

UV water treatment systems are a key line of defense against waterborne pathogens, and neglecting proper maintenance undermines their ability to ensure safe drinking water.

To raise awareness about this public health concern, Lake George Water Systems has brought the issue to the attention of the Lake George Park Commission and the Lake George Association. Additionally, a display will be exhibited with UV system information, including actual examples of ineffective sleeves, at various public locations.

The New York Department of Health was also contacted, which oversees public water systems—defined as those serving more than five homes. Since each lake home has its own pump, the NYDOH does not engage in homeowner outreach. However, with thousands relying on the same water source, Lake George Water Systems believes lake homeowners should receive the same information and outreach as communities that get annual Consumer Confidence Reports (CCR's) on water quality.

Homeowners and property managers are strongly advised to schedule routine maintenance with qualified specialists who understand the importance of servicing both the UV lamp and the quartz sleeve.
