Mainstream Media's Meltdown Continues but The Washington Post May Be on the Rise

RALEIGH, N.C. - Nov. 6, 2024 - PRLog -- Kamala Harris lost the election yesterday, but in many ways, the biggest loser was mainstream media. Once again, most in the media failed to recognize that a majority of Americans do not trust them to deliver facts, much less truth. We see this in the media's polling efforts.

In North Carolina Trump won 51.1% to 47.7% — by 3.4%. Before the race:
* WRAL-TV/SurveyUSA called the race a tie.
* CNN had Harris winning by 1%
* The NY Times had Harris winning by 2%

In Penn Trump won 50.5% to 48.5%
* NY Times, USA Today, CNN, and CBS had the race tied
* The Washington Post had Harris winning by 1%
* Fox had Trump winning by 1%

In Georgia Trump won 50.8% to 48.5%
* The NY Times had Harris winning by 1%

In describing why Trump won, AP News reports the reason as, "Coarse rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity, [that] resonated with angry voters—particularly men—in a deeply polarized nation."

Such language reinforces divisive stereotypes, framing these voters in a negative light rather than acknowledging the broader, more nuanced reasons behind their choices.

Rolling Stone frames Trump's victory as a reflection of cultural issues like valorization of the wealthy and persistent biases, including "pervasive sexism, racism, and xenophobia."

Fox won on points for accuracy, but the real media winner last night was the Washington Post.

By refusing to let his paper endorse Harris, Jeff Bezos may have tipped his hand. Over 200,000 people canceled their subscriptions to the paper in the first few days following news that the Washington Post would not endorse any candidate. Numerous staff resigned. Many assume this was a misstep by Jeff Bezos. Perhaps they forget that before Amazon, Bezos began his career as a hedge-fund manager in New York. His gift is reading trends and finding undervalued assets and turning them into profitable businesses.

Bezos may have looked across the media landscape and recognized that half the country feels their views are not reflected in the mainstream media. They're tired of being called names. If so, journalism majors with more conservative views might wish to submit their resumes to the Washington Post. By highlighting an ability to report fairly, without resorting to name-calling or oversimplifying perspectives, they may land a spot as the counter-balance to the sinking left.
