PRLog -- The Wisconsin People's Party calls for urgent actions to address the sweeps of homeless encampments at Milwaukee's park and ride facilities, where the city is wrongfully removing people. As treasurer Dean South states, "Being homeless or poor is not a crime, and many of these people are working families. Our unhoused neighbors have a right to exist in public spaces."
Wisconsin People's Party list of actions:
- Cease all encampment sweeps. The city is merely kicking people down the road, not solving the problem.
- Stop criminalizing poverty. People cannot trespass in public parking absent a crime.
- Acknowledge that there are no valid time, place, or manner restrictions at park and rides. These are public spaces.
- Designate safe spaces for temporary camps with basic amenities like toilets and trash pickup.
- Convert empty city buildings into emergency shelters and transitional housing.
- Expand mental health and addiction services with 24/7 mobile crisis teams.
- Create a "Housing First" program to rapidly rehouse people without preconditions.
- Establish a homeless bill of rights to protect against discrimination.
- Develop more affordable housing by taxing luxury real estate developments.
"Every person deserves a safe place to sleep," says South. " These sweeps are unconstitutional and violate individuals' rights to travel and stop without harassment."
"The city's actions are not just cruel, they're illegal," South adds. "Seizing people's vehicles and belongings violates their Fourth Amendment rights."
