Former Liberty University Employee File Lawsuit Alleging Unlawful Activities by Senior IT Leadership

Former Liberty University Employee Alleges Systemic Misconduct and Coverup by Senior IT Leadership in Lawsuit Seeking Damages for targeted retaliation after their Security Breaches and Ethical Lapses.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - June 25, 2024 - PRLog -- Matthew McGee, a former team manager and product leader at Liberty University (LU), has filed a lawsuit against his former employer in Lynchburg Circuit Court. Mr. McGee seeks a trial by jury and damages exceeding $25,000,000, alleging unlawful targeting and termination orchestrated by senior IT leadership in what he claims was a systematic coverup.

Mr. McGee's lawsuit outlines a series of serious allegations against Liberty University and its senior IT leadership, including claims of unlawful enrichment and potential illegal activities. Key allegations include:
  • Failure to disclose security breaches potentially exposing sensitive information to hostile third parties.
  • Publishing sensitive access passwords on unencrypted web servers.
  • Fraudulent insurance purchases and deception during audits.
  • Lack of essential cybersecurity measures across multiple systems.
  • Creation of false workstations to evade security audits.
  • Improper use of university assets and retaliatory actions against employees.
  • Intentional misrepresentations to hide breaches and hinder investigations.
  • Allegations of financial impropriety, including unauthorized withdrawals from Mr. McGee's bank account.

Mr. McGee, who worked at LU from 2019 to 2023, asserts that senior IT leadership orchestrated a campaign to undermine internal controls, subvert auditors, and mislead human resources and other investigators. He alleges that these activities were conducted covertly, often under the guise of social gatherings or off-site meetings designed to avoid legal scrutiny.

"I can't speak to their [potentially criminal] enterprise mindset here, but I can ask you the question – Are they eating their own dog food? They say they are training Champions in Christ, but they don't live it themselves. Should there be an investigation into these fraudulent activities? I think so. I absolutely think so.  I believe it is in the better public interest that these be brought to light.  Not only should the public be informed, but I deserve to be made whole for their unlawful acts against me."

Mr. McGee's lawsuit seeks damages for the harm caused by these alleged actions and emphasizes the importance of transparency and integrity in addressing the university's practices.

This lawsuit represents a significant legal challenge for Liberty University, raising allegations of misconduct at the highest levels of its IT leadership. Mr. McGee anticipates that a jury will find merit in his claims and hopes for a thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct.
