Follow on Google News | Parody Children's Book 'If Men Got Periods', Challenges Gender Norms with Humor and WitIt's about bloody time: a provocative critique of toxic masculinity that aims to challenge gender stereotypes and encourage reflection and empathy regarding societal attitudes towards menstruation.
By: Shalom Shore Whether it's through a multi-billion dollar "manpon" industry, supplements to increase their flow, or bragging about how much they've bled, the book turns the classic tropes around masculine bravado on their head. Inspired by classics such as Go the F**k to Sleep and the many parodies of Goodnight Moon, the book takes an irreverent stab at classic cultural machismo while subverting its power through scathing commentary ("Can I bleed on your face?") that is contrasted with whimsical illustrations. "I really enjoy using humor to get people thinking differently about a topic," explains Shore. "Humor has the power to make a point while bypassing many of our individual and societal defenses." Not everyone is getting the joke. A video of the author reading the book has garnered mostly negative comments, with reactions like "If men got periods we wouldn't be men" or "It would have been more fun if a woman wrote it from her perspective." Print versions of the book are available for purchase on Amazon, while a free digital version can be accessed on the author's website.
