BUFFALO, N.Y. - May 1, 2024 - PRLog -- ROCHESTER, NY — Today, the Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based public interest law firm, has taken legal action on behalf of CompassCare and eleven other pro-life organizations. They have filed a verified complaint in the New York State Supreme Court in Rochester, NY, to confront the New York Attorney General Letitia James. The lawsuit, titled CompassCare v. James, seeks to prevent what has been described as "imminent, ruinous legal action" by AG James against the pro-life ministries promoting the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) protocol.

The 66-page complaint asserts that James' threatened legal actions constitute an infringement on the Constitutional and Civil Rights of these Christian pro-life organizations, as outlined by the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the United States Constitution, the New York Constitution, and state civil rights laws. It highlights that James is purportedly using her office to unlawfully limit the constitutional freedoms of these organizations under USC 42, Section 1983, commonly known as the Third KKK Act of 1871.

On April 22, AG James informed these pregnancy centers of her plans to initiate legal proceedings within five business days, accusing them of using "misleading statements or omissions" in the advertising of the APR protocol, despite lacking any substantive evidence of complaints or harm to women.

This legal action by James mirrors a similar lawsuit filed by California Attorney General Rob Bonta against Heartbeat International and other pro-life centers last fall. According to CompassCare's CEO, Rev. Jim Harden, these actions by state AGs reflect a politicized approach to abortion, prioritizing political agendas over women's access to emergency reproductive health care.

Rev. Harden points out that contrary to claims by some political figures, the use of natural progesterone to reverse the effects of the abortion drug Mifepristone is supported by medical research. A 2023 review of 16 studies indicated that bioidentical progesterone used in early pregnancy does not increase maternal or fetal risk. Indeed, CompassCare's practice, which is part of Heartbeat International's Abortion Pill Rescue network, has successfully helped nearly 90% of women who opted to reverse their chemical abortions continue their pregnancies safely.

Rev. Harden further criticized the political motivations behind such lawsuits, stating, "If AG James and AG Bonta were genuinely concerned about protecting women from malpractice and fraud, they would not target pro-life pregnancy centers, which have an exemplary safety record. Abortions carry the risk of breast cancer, preterm deliveries, and suicide.

The lawsuit calls into question the fairness and integrity of politically motivated legal actions, which threaten not only the rights of pro-life organizations but also the foundational principles of American jurisprudence.
