Developments in Battery Technology Fuelling the Adoption of Electric Vehicles

Improving the Safety of Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are mostly used in the electric vehicles, and the price of these batteries have decreased significantly in the past. But what remains a cause of concern for EV battery manufacturers, is the safety of these batteries. While, some of these batteries can catch fire, particularly if they are damaged. On an yearly basis, companies spend  a lot of bucks for the development of safer batteries, which have no risk of catching fire.
An electrolyte that is fire-proof at extreme temperatures has been developed by the researchers at Stanford University. Lithium salt was added by them to a polymer-based electrolyte.

The lithium salt was increased from less than 50% to 63% by weight. LiFSI acts as an "anchor" in the electrolyte for extremely-combustible solvent molecules. With the help of this innovation, lithium-ion batteries can operate at an enormously high temperature.
We have focused on the use of batteries in electric vehicles, but it is not the only sue of batteries. They are used in consumer electronics such as cell phones, laptops etc.

It is because of the increase in the adoption of electric vehicles, due to many advancements taking place in battery technology, and the increasing use of consumer electronics, the demand for batteries will reach to a value of USD 176.92 billion by the end of this decade.
