Frank Bridge - Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato - transcribed for Clarinet and Piano

SOMERVILLE, Mass. - Jan. 19, 2024 - PRLog -- Noteworthy Sheet Music, LLC (NSM) is an online sheet music publisher, specializing in but not limited to flute and alto flute music, with a catalog of over 200 editions. They offer original works by distinguished contemporary composers, re-notated versions or facsimiles of rare historical scores, and unique transcriptions and arrangements of pieces from the classical repertoire. Selected NSM publications are offered as professionally-printed hard copy editions, while most are available as convenient PDF downloads from the NSM website.

Although a violist himself, Frank Bridge composed only a small but significant number of works which prominently feature the viola, including the two completed works for viola and piano, Pensiero and Allegro appassionato first published in 1908 and now transcribed by NSM for clarinet and piano.  As suggested by their titles, these two pieces were written in very different styles, but they complement each other well, showing off Bridge's composing versatility and providing performers an opportunity to display a range of emotions and capabilities.  Whereas the Pensiero is restrained and dark, the Allegro appassionato in contrast is exuberant and bright.

Certain chamber music works written for viola can also work very beautifully when transcribed for clarinet, and indeed may actually be coveted by clarinetists.  Brahms' Two Songs for Voice, Viola and Piano, Op. 91 is one such piece for which Noteworthy Sheet Music was asked to create a clarinet part and which has since become one of the most popular editions on the NSM website.   Clarinetists may soon discover that this new transcription of the viola part of Frank Bridge's Two Pieces: Pensiero and Allegro appassionato is also well-adapted and enjoyable to play.  In the NSM clarinet and piano edition, the Pensiero key has been raised from F minor to G minor, a few passages in both pieces have been taken 8va to bring them into clarinet range, and clarinet-friendly modifications have been substituted for the viola's occasional double stops, but otherwise the pieces remain as Bridge created them.  For additional information, visit the NSM listing page at
